Health and Wellness Plan

Prevention is better than cure” said Desiderius Erasmus. A life of a worker especially a programmer is a unique kind of job. These kind of people must be treated specially and must be handled with care. Programmers are one of the big contributors to our world in the field of technology. Their work must not be taken for granted and must not be underestimated. A programmer’s work is not an ordinary job and is not an easy-go-lucky type of job.

As a daily life of a programmer, what they usually do is that they sit in front of the computer, program, develop and design. Sounds cool? But to do it maybe 8-12 hours everyday as a freelance programmer or maybe 8-10 hours, 5-6 days straight every week as a company programmer, not so cool right ? And all that you’re going to do is sit and program. You can only stand when you feel the urge to go to the bathroom or when you’re going to eat outside.

So as the manager of the company, I am going to provide a health and wellness plan and the details are :

HEALTH AND WELLNESS PLAN FOR EMPLOYEES (PROGRAMMERS)
POSSIBLE HEALTH ISSUES PREVENTION OF POSSIBLE HEALTH ISSUES
EFFECTS : CAUSES : PREVENTION :
  • Obesity
Too much intake of foods and small physical activities to burn what have been digested.
  • Provide the right and healthy foods for the employees to eat. Give them enough time to rest and let them engage in different physical activities once or twice every week like zumba or fun run activies.
  • Eye-strain or other eye problems
Consistent contact with the monitor without rest, straight for 8-12hours almost everyday.
  • Provide a time for them to be free infront of the monitor and let them rest for a number of time.
  • Back and Posture problems
Improper sitting position while doing work and doing it for a long period of time.
  • Have a seminar once every month about body problems and how to treat it. Seminars that will let them learn about proper sitting positions while working or proper habits when infront of the computer.
  • Stress/Fatigue
Working extremely and not having enough rest. Sometimes it will also effect to headaches and dizziness.
  • If possible, provide them breaks every after 2-4 hours. Let them nap and relax, provide entertainment for them to enjoy while resting. A specific rest place will be provided for them.

PROBABLE HEALTH ISSUES:

Obesity : A programmer will have a high risk of being obese for his/her job is mainly done on a chair and in front of a computer. A programmer can eat and have his/her meals in front of the computer too which is a bad thing and in addition, lack of exercise will probably make the worker fat.

Eye strain and Other eye problems : Programmers spend 8-12 hours a day focusing in front of the monitor. And because of this, too much exposure to light and there’s only small time for the eyes to rest, there will be a big chance that the programmer will have different types of eye problems, headache and dizziness in addition in due time.

Back and posture problems : Too much sitting and sitting with the wrong position may cause back and posture problems.

Stress: There is also a big tendency for a programmer to work really hard and will forget to rest. A programmer’s work can be done anywhere and he/she only needs a medium like maybe a laptop or a personal computer. A programmer can work inside the company then after work at home and this can be a reason of stress due to lack of rest.

PREVENTION OF HEALTH ISSUES :

Healthy lifestyle: If possible, programmers should take any sport or have a daily exercise after working for them to make or maintain their bodies  being physically fit. Also, they must also sleep 8-10hrs a day if possible, for them to recharge from the frustrating day at work.

Computer free time:  After a tiring day from work, programmers must be away from their home computers. Personal programming can wait for another day. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, priority means to something that needs to be done first, so that’s why sometimes they have to set priorities and have a plan. They should have a properly planned time for their home programming and also for work programming.

And Lastly,

Is programming for you? : If the programmer’s life is affected by  work, stress is eating him/her inside, there’s no rest for him/her to have or maybe he/she is having a hard time working due to time conflict or he/she is not suitable for the position of a programmer, then maybe it’s the right time for him/her to find the right job to take in which his/her body will not be abused and he/she will still be able to  live free from stress.

So as a conclusion, programmers should maintain a healthy lifestyle and they should also know what is the right thing that needs to be done. Just like what Desiderius Erasmus said in the first paragraph, prevention is better than cure, so as early as possible, programmers should know that their job is not an easy job because their life is also at risk.

Has the world become overly dependent on computers ?

Become overly dependent? I don’t think so … Let’s say it’s more of “slowly becoming one”. We simply cannot generalize things though.

What we don’t know is that there are also people in different parts of the world that is not really dependent to computers. We can say that they’re the type of people in which the world of computer doesn’t really get their attention.  They do use some, but we can classify them as below average computer users. Below average computer users still use computer in terms of their work and daily living but unlike other computer users, they often use and buy computers the least. People I refer to are mostly found in rural or uninfluenced places in Africa. According to a research the continent of Africa tops the list with the most number of countries that is least developing.

Moreover, as we all know there are also some places in the Philippines which computers did not go that far. Places where poverty is a big issue and for sure the idea of computers in these places is low.  But aside from the fact that Philippines is a “Third World Country” and the country is in the process of globalization, The Philippines is still and will continue to cope up with the technology used these days.

As we can see, people nowadays are fond of following modern trends, but there are also people who can live normally without being able to use different types of computer in what they do every day. Despite of the reason that it makes our work quicker and easier, there’s just instances people can do things without them and doesn’t need to use them.

We might not know but there a lot of factors which affects the usage of computers around the globe. First and foremost, one of the most common yet a big problem of people nowadays is that they don’t have the sufficient amount of money to buy the “computer applied items” that they want. This “computer applied items” which I mean are IOS or Android Phones (IPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S6 or Samsung Galaxy Edge), Air conditioners, PC, laptops, tablets or maybe an HD Television. People think that they also need to buy these things immediately due to the trend and peer pressure even if money is a problem.(http://www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/1111/5-things-people-buy-because-of-peer-pressure.aspx)

Furthermore, complication is also one of the factors. Because of the evolving technology, computers are evolving into a more complicated system. Some people have it simple to use and some people don’t. And this is where the next factor comes. For me it is lack of wisdom and willingness to learn. When people are surrounded by computers and they themselves do not want to learn how it works then it makes them left out and independent.  But we cannot judge them if they do not want to use it. Being independent in some ways is a positive thing.

But going back to what I said on the first paragraph, I want to further elaborate why I think the world is still not an overly dependent world to computer but instead it is slowly becoming one. What I meant was that the world don’t really depend that much on computers because we still have the manual work made by the people.  They are the ones who operate machines for them to work. In addition, People are the ones who are creating computers that we will be using.

So, has the world become overly dependent to computers? Well, clearly it is a no for me. And now I therefore conclude that people may use different types of computer in their daily lives, but people may also not use computer because we really don’t know what factor affects them. It may be financial factor, complication or lack of willingness to learn.

But we can’t also tell that the world is in a passive state. It may still not be an overly dependent world to computers but someday it will be.
